Check Your Heart Condition!

What is the Condition of our Hearts?

There is no greater hunger or desire in the heart of God now as ever than that of an upright heart. The heart that is sincere, honest, truthful, God-fearing, selfless and truly caring.

For different reasons many hearts are corrupt today in our world. Those hearts, I’m referring to are not upright but froward, undependable, unreliable and false. Truth, which God desires in the inward part, is just not present in those hearts.

The scriptures affirm this position, when it declares that the heart of man is desperately wicked and very corrupt, in the book of Jeremiah. One may then wish to ask, why?

The reasons are varied but all of these reasons emanate from one - The Fall of Man. All have sinned and have come short of the glory of God, the scriptures inform. Beyond this main reason, however, there are other opportunistic tendencies. Nothing in this write-up should be misconstrued as an argument against the appropriateness of striving to excel or to be wealthy or prosperous in life please! Our God wants us to prosper, be in good health even as our souls prosper.

The instinct to survive in man dated as far back as the Stone Age when according to our Social Studies lessons indicated that the early man ruled, not according to the rule of law but by the might of the fist. It was the survival of the fittest. So the need to survive, and by extension, the need to excel has always been primordial to man. This fact has greatly influenced his choices in life – including the need to seek supernatural assistance in form of religion.

This need to survive, and to excel by all means most times, has introduced a desperate dimension into this subject such that but for the spiritual and moral intervention of God and religion, what probably will be left of man, would be a mere brute, nothing better than an animal. This was exactly about the condition of the Early Man referred to above.

The corrupting influence of this need to survive and to excel has greatly compromised a lot of hearts.

The above analysis coupled with that of Greed – the most rampageous of them all, is what we see today characterising our entire socio-political cum economic landscape. Politicians and businessmen/women have demonstrated so crooked a heart that the entire world has experienced so much cruelty, oppression and man’s inhumanity to man.

We are probably, as helpless at the ferociousness of this monster as it daily exposes its fangs and teeth through our overlords. I mean our super-rich politicians and businessmen who are not tired of amassing more wealth at the expense of the poor and the weak in the society. Here we are again, the survival of the fittest.

Thank God, however, for the Saving Grace of our Lord Jesus. I am convinced, despite the fact that our clerics in all religions are trying to outdo businessmen and politicians nowadays, that with diligent teaching for the transformation of the new man by the Word of God, we certainly do have a sure remedy.

Let us make no mistake about it; we are urgently in need of revival in the church. A replicate of the corruption in the church during the Victorian Age, which made Chaucer, a poet exclaim in helplessness ‘if gold should rust what will iron do, if our priests who are expected to be holy are themselves corrupt what will ordinary men do?’ Nobody is exempt here. We all need to wake up from our backslidings.

We need a little more kindness here. We need more souls with a little more selflessness here. We need more compassionate politicians, businessmen and clerics. We need to be our brother’s and sister’s keeper once more. We must have a Change of Heart. This is the only option before us or we perish!

The Apostle Paul in the first verse of the twelve chapter of his letter to the Romans recommends the tool of the Word of God, under the auspices of (the power of) the Holy Spirit, I believe, as agent for the renewal and the transformation of our minds. What do you think friend?
